Beginning: Investigating A Neon Sign Transformer

A Neon Sign Transformer was first opened. this was done out of pure curiosity. The transformer is filled with Tar for electrical insulation. These transformers give 15kV but are inductively ballasted (i.e. they have a mechanism inside them to prevent current to go above a certain value). The transformer turned out to be made up of 3 windings, a main winding (220V) and two secondary windings in series (7.5kV each). This reduces the potential stress and the possibilities of internal arching.
